Organisms get their energy from food whether they make their or eat another organism. Some of the energy is used to perform the organisms life tasks, and after used is released as heat. Some energy is stored for growth, development, repair and maintenance. The other energy can’t be used. Unused energy turns into waste. The energy stored in an organism transferred to the next organism that eats it. Normally about 10 percent of an organism’s energy is passed on to the organism that eats it. As a result, at each level the amount of energy an organism receives lessens. This is why in food chains and webs, there’s normally a maximum of four species, because there isn’t enough energy to feed more. This shows, how the plants (producers) Have the most energy, and how more and more energy is lost as it goes up to the animal on the top of the food chain.

Photosynthesis
Plants or producers make their food in a process called photosynthesis. Plants use a mixture of light, carbon dioxide, and water. This diagram show how the plant takes in sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, and then produces oxygen and sugars.
